Eating a lot and gaining weight is not something that most associate with an eating disorder. Most assume that someone just loves food and does not care about the fat they are gaining. The problem with this thinking is that most people that overeat are not doing it because they want to do it. They have a eating disorder. Treatment for binge eating is not as simple as someone stopping. You have to eat to live. Those with binge eating disorders do not eat to live, they tend to live to eat. They see food as an emotional comfort, or something that they use to connect with family and friends. Food tastes good, and it is that way so that we can eat to survive. However, now that we have things like sugars and processed flours, those foods are better than ever, and they are almost as addicting as drugs or nicotine can be. These foods are empty and worthless, but they taste darn good. Treatment for binge eating often starts with understanding and acknowledging these things.

Binge eating can come when someone feels sad, stressed, overwhelmed, lonely, or just plain depressed. The food can release some feel good hormones, but those are short lived and the person ends up feeling worse because they know they are going to gain more weight, or that they are going to have to go make themselves throw up to avoid that weight gain. Good treatment for binge eating disorders focuses on working through the emotions and life events without using food for comfort. It is a hard adjustment, but it can be done.

If you feel that you need treatment for binge eating, the first thing you have to do is to be honest about it to those that love you the most. You don't have to post a status on Facebook, just tell those that live in your home that you think you need help for the sake of your health and well being. This leaves them in the loop and able to help you. They may not understand what you are going through, but they can support you in what you need to do. If they do not, perhaps they are not the best people to be around while you try to turn your life around for the better. Be firm about what you need to do, and then do it.

People with binge-eating disorder often feel miserable about their lives and are at higher risk of serious health complications than are those without the disorder.

In many cases to avoid others realizing what is happening they will do their binge eating in secret, along with eating more food than would be considered normal. This is because they feel that they have complete control over the situation.

Often obese individuals seek comfort in food, and end up developing food addictions. These addictions can also be a form of emotional eating. Emotional eating is basically when one eats not to satisfy physical hunger but rather to deal with tough or negative emotions. Stress eating is a good example where one will consume larger quantities of food on a stressful day.

Next time you are considering quick weight loss, think again. Trying to lose weight quickly is unnatural and dangerous. Also being obsessed with your body weight can lead to developing eating disorders. It's best to lose weight naturally through exercise, and gradually taking on healthier eating habits.
